13/02/2019

Award demonstrates support for UK regional young artists

Kleinwort Hambros, one of the UK’s leading private bank and wealth managers, today announced its five finalists for the Kleinwort Hambros Emerging Artist Prize. This initiative has been launched to recognise and reward rising talent in Contemporary Art across the UK.

Finalists Larry Achiampong, Rebecca Ackroyd and Evan Ifekoya are all from London, while Liam Crichton is Scottish born and Belfast based, and Freya Dooley is based in Cardiff, but originally from Gloucestershire. All have been nominated for their individual art projects and contribution to the emerging arts scene, where they have explored social, political and historical issues through space, moving image, sculpture and more.

The Kleinwort Hambros Emerging Artist Prize rewards the work of a young contemporary artist selected from across the UK. Artists aged up to 35 who have made an original artistic contribution in one or more of the following fields: painting, photography, sculpture, digital, installation art, drawing and video, were nominated by independent experts from the UK Contemporary Art scene.

The winner will be announced at an exclusive gala dinner in London at the end of February, having been selected by a prestigious jury comprising of Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Director of the Serpentine Gallery, Clare Lilley, Director of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Andrew Nairne, Director of Kettle’s Yard at the University of Cambridge, Fiona Bradley, Director of the Fruitmarket Gallery and Aurelie Deplus, Head of Contemporary Art Sponsorship at Societe Generale.

Commenting on the news, Paul Kearney, Head of Private Banking at Kleinwort Hambros, said: “We are incredibly pleased to announce our five finalists for our first UK Contemporary Art award. Along with our parent company, Societe Generale, who has been an active patron of Contemporary Art for over 20 years, we recognise the importance of supporting and raising visibility for up and coming artists.

“This initiative complements Kleinwort Hambros’ nationwide approach to serving clients, with an active presence in key regions, including London, Newbury, Cambridge, Leeds and Edinburgh. It also reinforces our position as a forward-thinking organisation, driven by creativity and innovation.”
